Monthly magazine with 11 regional editions and a circulation of more than 750,000.
Focuses on a fitness-oriented lifestyle, covering sports like running, cycling and triathlon

• Created and executed an overall editorial plan for the magazine as part of the senior editorial staff

• Wrote and edited the Chicago edition of the magazine, including feature stories, news and a monthly column

• Wrote national features and cover stories that ran across all 11 editions of the magazine

• Managed the national online calendar of events, which also ran in print across all 11 editions

Windy City Publishing

Editorial Director, 1997-2009

Chicago-based magazine company published Windy City Sports, Rocky Mountain Sports, Twin Cities Sports and 

MetroSports in Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., before being purchased by The Competitor Group. 

Total circulation of 400,000 in six different cities 12 times a year. The magazines combined shared national 

editorial with unique regional stories plus a calendar of events in each issue.  

Directed the editorial and production departments for the entire company, managing about a dozen 

employees and budget of more than $500,000

Hired the editorial and production staff after the purchases of Rocky Mountain Sports and MetroSports 

magazines. Oversaw the creation of Twin Cities Sports magazine. 

• Managed the creation and maintenance of six regional websites.

Created and implemented yearly and monthly editorial schedules for all six editions of the magazine. 

Oversaw cover design and photo shoots. Managed a national calendar of events. Attended various industry

                events. Worked with the sales department in the creation of advertorial programs and inserts.

• Wrote feature stories, news, profiles and a monthly column

Contributed to the creation of Gen-A (Generation Active), a media company that provided national editorial

                for other regional publications with a similar focus

Attended races and community events to promote the magazines and generate editorial ideas 

Windy City Sports

Editor, 1995-1997

Windy City Sports magazine was founded in 1987. I was the magazine’s third editor, and the entire editorial
department when I came aboard. The monthly magazine had a circulation of 100,000.

Created the editorial plan for the magazine

Managed freelancers and wrote feature stories, news, profiles and a monthly column

Directed the monthly production of the magazine with an art staff of three

Naperville Magazine

Dining Critic, 2005-2008

A glossy monthly lifestyle magazine that covers Naperville and the western suburbs

Wrote a monthly restaurant review and occasional food-related features

Screen Magazine

Associate Editor, 1994

Covered the Chicago film, production and postproduction industry
